Chapter 4

Darrin woke up with a heavy heart. For a moment he didn’t know why, and then he remembered their quarrel. How could Ethan not understand his position? How could Ethan not understand why Darrin just couldn’t come out? His family, his future—everything would be messed up if he declared as openly gay.

But then he began to see things from Ethan’s point of view. Surely it wasn’t easy to pretend to be just friends with someone he really liked as more than just a friend. They had both said they wanted a serious, committed relationship. Could this be a satisfactory relationship for Ethan in the long term if he had to keep hiding it? If Ethan was guilty of not being understanding of Darrin’s position, wasn’t it possible that Darrin, too, was guilty of the same thing?

Darrin decided he would call Ethan and apologize. Not for insisting on total discretion and secrecy—he couldn’t help himself in that regard—but for not seeing things Ethan’s way. It took two to make an argument, and while Ethan had surely escalated it, there had to be fault on Darrin’s side, too.

He would just get a cup of coffee so that he was fully awake, and then he would call Ethan.

As it happened, though, Ethan called him first.

“I apologize,” he said as soon as Darrin answered the phone. “I should never have let the disagreement go that far. I should have been more—”

“No! No! I apologize,” Darrin cut him short. “I wasn’t seeing your point of view. I wasn’t thinking of your feelings.”

“Even so, I got carried away. I let things get out of hand.” “Truce?” Darrin said.

“There never was a war,” Ethan answered softly. Then he went on. “I never should have put pressure on you. Yes, I would very much like for the world to know you’re my boyfriend. At least, I hope you’re still my boyfriend…?”

“I hope so!” Darrin answered.

“But you have to be comfortable in your own skin,” Ethan went on. “Well, if we’re still good, I have a suggestion. How about a weekend out of town? You wouldn’t have to hide your feelings among strangers who don’t know your family, and it would do us both good to get away anyhow. There’s a B&B over in Danville that sounds charming and relaxing. The next weekend you have a Saturday off, we’ll go. We’ll leave Friday night, spend Friday night, Saturday, Saturday night, and Sunday morning there. I’m sure we can find things to do in and around Danville—if I let you out of bed long enough. We probably need to check out by eleven or something, but we can stop and have lunch and maybe find someplace else interesting to go before we come home. What do you say?”

“You’ve got it all planned out, huh?”

“And in the meanwhile, I certainly want to see you before that. What are you doing tomorrow?”

“I guess the right answer is, ‘Spending the evening with you’?”

“Ding! Correct answer! You win the prize!”

Darrin was glad the quarrel was over and he and Ethan were back on an even keel.
